Golden Thread

the chief execs, the top percent
knew well ahead what was coming next
so they all divested while we chased another check
the scientists who'd find the threat
were fired before the wave had hit
in research and in religion the country split
empty shelves in every grocery store
it ain't hard to tell what kind of hell this nation's headed for
the president, he shrugs and says
"you'll get your tests, but why so tense?
with every death the dollar gains a little strength"
empty rooms, hungry for a song
nothing new, these kinds of blues were right here all along
homelessness, unemployment
no wonder bread in the apartment
the fed throws billions at the f*cking stock market
deliverymen, cashiers, RNs
are worth more than any banker's pen
one virus pulls the golden thread
